The DesYIgn project, supported by ProMo-Cymru, uses Service Design methodology to help youth workers better engage with young people in a modern world.

About the project

Service Design is a tried and tested methodology for designing and improving digital services. The key principle is about keeping people’s needs at its core.

The Service Design process is a powerful tool used across multiple sectors that can also be used to support youth workers to both innovate new services and products, or to rethink and strengthen existing services. The aim of the DesYIgn project was to help youth workers and the youth sector to rethink how services are designed for young people, using Service Design methodology.

This project is a European wide Erasmus+ funded project, led by ERYICA. ProMo-Cymru has partnered with nine organisations who are leading youth practitioners across Europe. These partners include ERYICA (Luxembourg), Youth Work Ireland (Ireland), Koordinaatti (Finland), Agence Nationale pour l’Information des Jeunes (Luxembourg), Dirección General de Juventud y Deportes de Madrid (Spain), ProMo Cymru (Wales, UK), Aġenzija Żgħażagħ (Malta), Institut Valencià de la Joventut (Spain) and Åbo Akademi University (Finland).

What happened?

At the beginning of the project, Åbo Akademi University led research into young people’s information seeking needs and behaviours across Europe, which helped to inform the DesYIgn project. You can read the report here.

As part of the DesYIgn project, ProMo-Cymru created tools and resources including the DesYIgn Toolkit and training videos, which informed the content of the e-learning course, designed by Koordinaatti. These resources will introduce youth workers to Service Design methodology with the aim to support them to continuously evolve and improve youth information services in line with young people’s ever changing information seeking behaviours.

After the completion of the research, resources, and e-learning course, a pilot of the course was run with 15 youth information professionals across Europe. The DesYIgn course was very well received with positive feedback.

What’s Next?

The DesYIgn course will be rolled out into countries across Europe. It will be translated into 5 languages: Finish, German, Spanish, French and Catalan, as well as English. The course and resources will be free for all youth information workers across Europe.

Join ProMo-Cymru along with youth work professionals across Wales in our next Creating Conversations, focussing on Service Design in Youth Work. Creating Conversations will feature the launch of the DesYIgn course, as well as leading guest speakers including Imre Simon from ERYICA and Rebecca Rae-Evans from Reply. The event will be held on Zoom between 10-11:30AM on Thursday 13th July 2021 – save the date!

Working with ProMo-Cymru

ProMo-Cymru works with organisations to empower them with the skills needed to implement Service Design methodology into their organisation. Additionally, ProMo supports organisations directly to design and develop services for young people, whether that be online or offline.
