In 2011, Wales became the first country in the UK to make the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) part of its domestic law.

And as of the 1st of May, every minister in the Welsh Government is required to consider the rights of children and young people in all the decisions they make on new legislation, policies and changes to existing policy.

This duty on ministers to have due regard to the requirements of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) has come into force backed by the Welsh Government’s Children’s Rights Scheme.

This document also spells out how young people can challenge ministers who they believe fail to keep children’s rights in mind.

The Deputy Minister for Children & Social Services, Gwenda Thomas AM, visited the Big Pit National Coal Museum to meet with local school children an at event on Tuesday 1st of May to talk about their lives and rights.
