Meirion Morgan was born and attended school in the Cynon Valley. He read mathematics at the universities of Cardiff and Oxford, and currently lectures mathematics and business in higher education. He spent over a decade in a range of technical banking roles in the City of London, which included co-founding both a specialist financial services company and niche software provider. He has worked extensively as a Trustee for South Wales based charities.
